Why Candle Care Matters
A quality candle is an investment in your home's atmosphere. With a few simple habits, you can get significantly more burn time and a better scent throw from every candle you own — whether it's a soy wax pillar, a beeswax taper, or a luxury jar candle.
1. The First Burn Is the Most Important
The very first time you light a candle, let it burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container. This is called achieving a full melt pool, and it typically takes 2–4 hours depending on the candle's diameter.
Skipping this step causes tunnelling — where the candle burns straight down the centre, leaving a thick wall of unused wax around the sides. Once tunnelling starts, it's very difficult to reverse.
2. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
Before lighting your candle each time, trim the wick to about 6 mm (¼ inch). A long or mushroomed wick causes the flame to burn too hot, producing black soot, uneven melting, and a shorter candle life.
Use a wick trimmer or small scissors. Remove any trimmed pieces from the wax before lighting.
3. Keep Burns Between 2 and 4 Hours
Burning a candle for too long overheats the wax and can cause the fragrance to burn off too quickly. Aim for sessions of 2–4 hours. After extinguishing, let the candle cool completely before relighting.
4. Use a Candle Snuffer, Not Your Breath
Blowing out a candle can send the wick off-centre and push soot into the wax. A candle snuffer extinguishes the flame cleanly and keeps the wick upright for the next burn. Browse our candle accessories collection for snuffers and wick trimmers.
5. Store Candles Away from Light and Heat
UV light and heat can fade the colour and weaken the fragrance of your candles over time. Store them in a cool, dark place — ideally with a lid or dust cover — when not in use.
6. Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Debris like matches, wick trimmings, or dust can act as secondary wicks and cause uneven burning or flare-ups. Always keep the wax pool clean before lighting.
